The Escort was announced in 1968, and began a line that topped the sales charts regularly until the Focus arrived in 1998. Because of its now legendary motorsport success it is easy to forget just how effective a family car the MkI Escort was. With sharp steering, slick gearboxes, and free revving pushrod engines, even the base models drove well. It was also simple to maintain, very reliable and had what at the time was considered a fantastically effective heater.
