The Hampshire Constabulary ran a fleet of Rover 3500 V8 patrol cars. HBK 875N was stationed at Basingstoke and used as a traffic patrol car on the M3 motorway. One morning the crew came to work and discovered that the car was missing. They eventually traced it to the main workshops at Winchester, where they were informed that they would not be getting the vehicle back as it was destined for ‘greater duties’. The vehicle was stripped of all its Police livery and equipment and transferred to the Isle of Wight, where it was to be used as the official transport of the Earl Mountbatten of Burma, during his frequent visits to the island.
