Hai jongens,
Hi guys,
I am new, so please forgive me in advance if I ask a stupid question.
I have finally decided to start collecting seriously. Financial reasons for not doing it, but I just want this. Then just sandwiches with peanut butter.
I was wondering which trade fairs you visit regularly. I am very interested in the VOC and Roman era, as well as old Dutch coins from the period 1300-1588.
Questions are never stupid, only answers sometimes.
Apart from the shops in Catawiki (a source), fairs and auctions are a good place to acquire coins (especially from the aforementioned collecting areas). A visit to a local coin dealer (if there is one) is also a good starting point. But first of all: buy some good catalogs (or download them from the internet on an e-reader or something).
For classical coins, these are the catalogs of Cohen (8 volumes), Sear (Roman Coins and their values), Seaby (Roman Silver Coins, among others) and the thick RIC books (Roman Imperial Coins, 10 volumes). Most of these catalogs can be found (sometimes with some effort) for free somewhere on the internet as a download file. The books themselves are very expensive to purchase. Here you will find a lot of information about antique coins.
I don't immediately have good advice for the old Dutch coins, because I don't do anything in this. a reputable dealer (affiliated with the Dutch Association of Coin Dealers) may be able to provide better advice in this regard.
For auctions of antique coins, for example, you can go to the Calssical Numismatic Group (www.cng.com), which I personally have very good experiences with. Don't be overwhelmed by the immense amount of coins on that auction (there are bi-weekly auctions with around 300 to 500 lots), it's like a candy store when you browse that site.
Exchanges are often also good places to take a closer look at coins, but sometimes the prices there are quite high. Here too: only buy from reputable dealers, because one of the disadvantages of antique coins is that there are relatively many counterfeits in circulation, especially of the more expensive coins (such as tetradrachmes from Attica of Athens). Anyway, never buy antique coins abroad in tourist shops, these are almost always counterfeit, no matter how real they look. Don't be put off by the latter, antique coins are a special collecting area because every coin is hand struck and no two are identical. Moreover, for a few euros you already own a piece of history that is two thousand years old. Just go to an antique store.
Examples of fairs can be found in the fair overview on the Catawiki site. The fairs in Tilburg, the Holland Coin Fair (early February) in The Hague, and the MPO fairs (see www.mpo.nl), among others, are a few examples of meetings that also include dealers in antique and early Dutch coins.
Oh yes, general advice: if you have a choice between a large number of medium quality coins or a few good quality coins, go for the single coins. Always try to collect on quality. The prices may be higher, but the coins look so much nicer and the eye also wants something and that is often of secondary importance in coin country, while it is actually the most important thing.
Good luck collecting!
