I remember Avatar (Air Master) was once a comic book hero before the TV version came. Or am I wrong?

I don't mean a magazine, but a "real" comic that served as a model for the TV hero.
In 1991, DC Comics released a three-part series called Avatar, which was comic based on the TSR Forgotten Realms game.

As far as I know, 'The Avatar' first appeared in the computer RPG Ultima 4 in 1985. Maybe they 'borrowed' it somewhere too.

Avatar: The Last Airbender was co-created and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank, California. Animation work was mostly done by three animation studios in South Korea: JM Animation, DR Movie, and Moi Animation. According to Bryan Konietzko, the program was conceived in the spring of 2001 when he took an old sketch of a balding, middle-aged man and re-imagined the character as a child.[1] Konietzko drew the character herding bison in the sky, and showed the sketch to Mike DiMartino. At the time, DiMartino was studying a documentary about explorers trapped in the South Pole. Konietzko described their early development of the concept:
“ We thought, "There's an air guy along with these water people trapped in a snowy wasteland... and maybe some fire people are pressing down on them..." ”
The co-creators successfully pitched the idea to Nickelodeon vice president and executive producer Eric Coleman just two weeks later.

So there wasn't a comic of it first.

That, of course, is another Avatar, Scam.
The term comes from Hinduism and is thousands of years old.

Thanks for all the feedback! I thought I once saw such comics without the Nickelodeon logo and long before the TV series was there, but apparently my memory is no longer what it used to be.
