Platenhandelaar Henk van Zoelen bezat vanaf 1930 de exclusieve rechten van het Engelse Decca-label. Hij begon daarvoor in 1934 een eigen perserij in Amsterdam, waarbij Philips bijstond in de fabricage van persmatrijzen. Direct na de oorlog kreeg Philips steeds meer interesse in muziek en nam ze de aandelen van De Hollandsche Decca Distributie van Van Zoelen over. Er werd daarvoor een speciale platentak in het leven geroepen onder de naam N.V. Philips Phonografische Industrie: afgekort PPI. Het hoofdkantoor hiervan zat in Baarn. De Nederlandse tak werd Phonogram genoemd. Vanuit Baarn regelde men de releasenummers van de verschillende labels (Philips, Decca, Fontana en Mercury).
In 1962 ging Philips een samenwerkingsverband aan met Siemens & Halske. Zij waren de eigenaren van Deutsche Gramophon en Polydor. In 1972 leidde dat tot de oprichting van PolyGram, terwijl Phonogram en Polydor in Nederland beide aparte bedrijven bleven. In 1987 kocht Philips Siemens uit en werd zodoende eigenaar van Polygram.
In 1998 werd moedermaatschappij PolyGram overgenomen door Seagram. En dat werd uiteindelijk de Universal Music Group.

Record dealer Henk van Zoelen owned the exclusive rights of the English Decca label from 1930 onwards. In 1934 he started his own press shop in Amsterdam, where Philips assisted in the manufacture of press molds. Immediately after the war, Philips became increasingly interested in music and took over the shares of De Hollandsche Decca Distribution from Van Zoelen. A special record branch was created for this purpose under the name N.V. Philips Phonographic Industry: PPI for short. Its head office was in Baarn. The Dutch branch was called Phonogram. The release numbers of the various labels (Philips, Decca, Fontana and Mercury) were arranged from Baarn.
