The intention is that the person who enters an item makes a scan of at least the front, but preferably also the back of the DVD/video, etc.
As icing on the cake, a pack shot, booklet, appendix, etc. may also be added as image 3.
If you use image 3 for something else that is included with the item, please indicate what it is exactly under Details.
Copying images from elsewhere on the internet is a. not neat, but b. (and this is currently even more important) for administrators to check. Differences between the various worldwide versions of a DVD or video are sometimes subtle, and we want to be as careful as possible so that every user has the correct picture in his collection/shop.
That makes Catawiki an even more reliable system and will certainly pay off in the long term.
In the largest collecting area (Comics) we have not been so 'strict' from the start, but we now regularly encounter problems because of that.
With a section like DVD , which has to be built almost from the ground up, we now have the opportunity to tackle it a little more precisely, so we have to grab it with both hands.
Or if you are using an internet image, then later place your OWN scan or set in detail then the image needs to be replaced.
I did this myself and added my own images later.

That is certainly a good intention, but how do you find those items later? You cannot search for Particulars.
And if it says "This picture still needs to be replaced" someone may "just" replace it by… by… yes, by what actually? (;-)
So there are some similar dangers to it, I think.
I received a message from Arco that my entered 24 boxes will be rejected because I have not made a scan myself. A pity, because it took me quite some time to fill in all the information correctly.
I don't see why that would be a problem when the cover of the internet is the same as the one I have in the closet. I bought the DVD box at bol.com, so I pick a picture from there. I check that picture with what I have in the cupboard. Should things go wrong somewhere, the wiki aspect should provide a self-cleaning ability. If it were possible to enter the EAN code of a DVD edition, then it should still be possible to check for which edition it is if the picture is not correct (as is possible with books with ISBN ).
it seems to me that with this rule it could take a very long time for the DVD section to get off the ground ... if I come here as a newcomer and I can match a lot of items ticking off (as with comics), scanning a few items that are not in the catalog is not that difficult. But if I had to scan everything I have in the closet, I would soon drop out ...
I'll add those images tomorrow and have them all here;)
Also have a mountain of DVD 's and wait and see what others enter, it saves me a lot of work, but if the picture resembles that of the internet, but has been scanned myself, what then?

What I miss in this story most (nobody) puts a scan (s) on their own copy.
Which gives you the option to show 6 scans of an item.
And so more visual information of the item. Which makes everything clearer.
Well, but those three extra are included in your own collection, so no one will see that unless they look / search your collection.

Meanwhile, some users entered image 3 with a poster of the film. If not included with the DVD, however, it belongs to the "Poster / Poster" collection area.
Where I encountered them, they have since been removed.

From now on, a separate scan of the back of the item is mandatory. There is usually exactly all the information to distinguish the different versions from each other.

if that also applies to magazines, then I immediately stop listing all the playboys, penthouses and Jerry Cotton's (over 1000), I want to do it but not if I am forced to do so with every entry. You don't have the problem of recognition with magazines.

yes, but it is non-committal, but okay, it says.
I would put scan 1 front scan 2 back required!
scan 3 free choice

Only 1 image is currently required for plates: the first. It also specifies that the first image must be from the front and the second from the back. However, the third image is not free: it is intended for a scan of the label. It does not say whether it should be the cover or the vinyl itself. I approve both.
The completion instructions are put in by the programmers.
What should definitely happen within records / CDs is to make the second image and maybe even the third image mandatory. Although the latter will probably cause problems in the sense that there may be less imports.

whether there are 2 or 3 that won't matter much
at most with girths without cover.
I just think requiring data to match the input.
and that can only be checked with scans.
but if you make scans mandatory input field then you are well on the right track!
And I do not believe that many users drop out, The only thing I find unfortunate are those genes that promise I will place the scans later and do not keep that.
especially if you have to add scans later, it is much more time consuming.

Have you also taken into account that many (future) users will certainly drop out of the record section? Scanning or photographing an LP (of good readable quality) takes a lot of time, add that there is still a lot of work to be done to make it an acceptable image with all the info and the manual input of all tracks and artists and you can count your fingers that it will also immediately be the downfall of the record section.

It takes a lot of time, but my experience is that people want to invest time in it.
It is only difficult if items are accepted, with less data.
I have been hammering on it for a long time and also quickly adding the information we provide on the forum.
And that administrators in particular perform their input optimally certainly helps.

the manual entry of all tracks and artists and you can count on your fingers that it will also be the downfall of the record section.
most input is cut and paste work in my experience and a lot of data can of course be retrieved from the central databases
quit more or not start it
will come by not being able to mention composers in classical, no conductor etc.

Until now, a lot of cutting and pasting work has been possible for many, but that does not apply to all genres and when I can copy something, I still have to convert the track titles to lowercase because CW does not use the usual English title entry in capital letters. Then I can retype it faster.
I do not express my opinion in my earlier message, but my fears. And I can also imagine something about it. Compare the plates section with most of the other sections and you will already understand why stamps are growing faster. Time spent there is certainly no more than a few minutes with copying, including scan and photo editing. Time spent on an LP with front and back scans can easily amount to fifteen minutes to half an hour. That is just a lot of time and when your record cabinet is nicely filled with the format 12 "then you ask a lot. The people you approach have already made a choice, they have registered with CW and have even started entering it. How many potential We reject users in advance by setting the threshold too high? Some still have an account, but many will not even start.
It is really the more avid collectors who like cataloging who are talking about it. That is just a small group, if we want to get the less fanatical administrators we have to think carefully about the frameworks and what they imply.

This discussion is of course completely wrong with the DVD section, but it is no less interesting.
It kind of ties in with that twenty-seventh edition of Harry Potter.
I am quite an avid (but not completely crazy) collector and try to do my best when entering items. And since this is about Records and DVDs:
Vinyl / Records: as Chevy says, that's a hell of a job in itself, especially for vinyl (I still have a series to go and with my photo abilities I dread that, but it will come).
Entering tracks individually (unless you can import them from a central database) is counterproductive. These are not going to be mandatory fields and so they will remain blank. The situation as it is now with the list is laborious enough.
DVD: It's a bit of the same thing, but a lot worse. Most of the DVDs I have are TV series. If you have to enter it correctly (actors, producers, episodes, choir members, groupies ...) then you will spend half a day on one box. So I don't do that anymore.
And you also have to realize that all that information is already available on highly specialized sites with a lot more details.
PS: that does not mean that the extra field for composers should not be added immediately and now

I think that images that have been 'picked / borrowed' from the internet, if they are (are) allowed to be used, should at least be of good quality. I can immediately recognize when the image has been downloaded from the internet, because these are usually very small images and then you cannot see any details. I find that very unfortunate, since I also use CataWiki as a reference book.
It is of course the case that if you have a catalog item where it is, you can make a scan yourself that is better and thus improve the catalog. However, I don't think that is what CataWiki intends to do, I think. The convenience of the catalog is that if your item is in it, all you have to do is add it to your own collection with the necessary comments for yourself.
And about the record discussion, which I do not think belongs here, but very interesting, I just want to say that when I see an item with an image in the catalog that I have, I first add it to my collection with the comment that I also have to take my own photo of it.
Also about the plates that I still have to import (there are a lot of them), I try to take pictures against a white background and only then will I add them to the collection.
And in general about CataWiki, anyone who has an item that is already in the catalog can add information that is not there yet, thus completing the information about an item. That's how I do that with many items that I also have.

@DisneyMeentwijc
@DisneyMeentwijc
it does not matter against which background you take the photo, it is the intention that no background is visible on the photo that is placed in CW. The item (in this case a photo of a record sleeve) must therefore fill the screen. Just as with comics.
This does not apply to statues and the like where that is not possible ...
