F – John Paul Jones, John Barry et les navires “Bonhomme” et “Lexington”**
John Paul Jones: officier de marine écossais. Engagé dans la marine américaine, il est l'un des héros sur mer de la guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis. Bien qu'il se soit fait des ennemis au sein de l'élite politique américaine, son action pendant la révolution lui vaut une réputation qui dépasse les frontières de la jeune nation et qui persiste aujourd'hui. Il sert par la suite dans la Marine impériale russe.
John Barry: officier de la Continental Navy pendant la guerre d'indépendance des États-Unis et plus tard dans l'United States Navy. Il est largement reconnu que “le père de la marine américaine ” (il partage ce surnom avec John Paul Jones). Il est le premier capitaine placé à la tête d’un navire de guerre américain sous le drapeau de la Continental Navy. Il atteint en fin de carrière le grade de commodore.
Les“Bonhomme Richard” et “Lexington”:
Le “Bonhomme Richard” était une frégate de la Continental Navy, la marine constituée lors de la révolution américaine. Ancien indiaman de la Compagnie française des Indes orientales, il est construit en 1765 à l'arsenal de Lorient. Il fut mis à la disposition de John Paul Jones en 1779 par le roi de France Louis XVI grâce à l'appi de Jacques-Donatien Le Ray.
Le “Lexington” des Treize Colonies est un brick acheté en 1776. Le Lexington était un voilier de guerre à deux mâts de 86 pieds pour la marine continentale naissante des colons pendant la guerre d’Indépendance américaine (1775-1783).

John Paul Jones: Scottish naval officer. Engaged in the American Navy, he was one of the heroes at sea of the American War of Independence. Although he made enemies within the American political elite, his action during the revolution earned him a reputation that went beyond the borders of the young nation and persists today. He later served in the Russian Imperial Navy.
John Barry: Officer of the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War and later in the United States Navy. It is widely acknowledged that “the father of the U.S. navy” (he shares this nickname with John Paul Jones). He was the first captain to lead an American warship under the flag of the Continental Navy. He reached the rank of commodore at the end of his career.
“Bonhomme Richard” and “Lexington”:
The "Bonhomme Richard" was a frigate of the Continental Navy, the navy formed during the American Revolution. Former Indiaman of the French East India Company, it was built in 1765 at the Arsenal of Lorient. It was made available to John Paul Jones in 1779 by the King of France Louis XVI thanks to the appi of Jacques-Donatien Le Ray.
The “Lexington” of the Thirteen Colonies was a brig purchased in 1776. The Lexington was an 86-foot two-masted warship for the burgeoning mainland colonial navy during the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783).

F – Stephen Decatur, Thomas MacDonough et le navire “Saratoga”
Stephen Decatur: commodore, officier de marine américain de la marine américaine. Il fut particulièrement remarqué pour ses exploits lors de la Seconde Guerre de Barbarie et de la Guerre de 1812. Stephen Decatur est le plus jeune officier de marine à avoir atteint le grade de capitaine (capitaine de marine) au cours de la jeune histoire de la marine américaine.
Thomas MacDonough: officier de marine irlandais-américain du début du XIXe siècle connu pour ses rôles dans la première guerre de Barbarie et la guerre de 1812. Il était le fils d’un officier révolutionnaire, Thomas Macdonough, Sr. qui vivait près de Middletown, Delaware.
Le “Saratoga” : corvette construite à Vergennes, dans le Vermont, pour servir sur le lac Champlain pendant la guerre de 1812. Elle porte le nom des batailles de Saratoga.

Stephen Decatur: commodore, US Navy Officer. He was particularly noted for his exploits during the Second Barbarian War and the War of 1812. Stephen Decatur is the youngest naval officer to reach the rank of captain (captain of navy) during the young history of the American navy.
Thomas MacDonough: Irish-American naval officer of the early 19th century known for his roles in the First Barbary War and the War of 1812. He was the son of a revolutionary officer, Thomas Macdonough, Sr. who lived near Middletown, Delaware.
The Saratoga: corvette built in Vergennes, Vermont, to serve on Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. It bears the name of the battles of Saratoga.

David G. Farragut: commandant en chef de l'U.S. Navy pendant la guerre de Sécession. Il fut le premier amiral de la flotte américaine. On se souvient de lui dans la culture populaire pour son ordre donné lors de la bataille de Mobile: “Au diable les torpilles, en avant toute ! ”
David D. Porter: amiral de la marine américaine et membre de l’une des familles les plus distinguées de l’histoire de la marine américaine. Promu deuxième officier de la marine américaine à atteindre le grade d’amiral, après son frère adoptif David G. Farragut, Porter a aidé à améliorer la marine en tant que surintendant de l’Académie navale américaine après un service important dans la guerre de Sécession.
Le “Hartford”: sloop de l’US Navy, le premier à porter le nom d'Hartford, la capitale du Connecticut.Il fut lancé le 22 novembre 1858 et commença sa carrière militaire le 27 mai 1859 avec le capitaine Charles Lowndes. Le bateau participa à l'esquadre de l'Est Indien, à la Guerre de Sécession avec la bataille de La Nouvelle-Orléans et le siège de Vicksburg. En 1945, le navire est finalement classé monument historique mais il coulera alors qu'il était amarré le 20 novembre 1956.
Le “Powhatan” : Inaugurée en 1850, fin de service en 1886, frégate à vapeur de la United States Navy propulsée par deux roues à aubes, qui fut utilisée entre autres contre la piraterie en mer de Chine et durant la guerre de Sécession. Ce fut l'un des plus grands, et l'un des derniers vaisseaux de guerre à aubes américains. Son nom est celui d'un cacique amérindien de Virginie orientale.

David G. Farragut: commander-in-Chief of the U.S. Navy during the American Civil War. He was the first admiral of the American fleet. He is remembered in popular culture for his command in the Battle of Mobile: “To hell with the torpedoes!”
David D. Porter: admiral of the U.S. Navy and member of one of the most distinguished families in the history of the U.S. Navy. Promoted to the second American naval officer to reach the rank of admiral, after his adopted brother David G. Farragut, Porter helped improve the navy as superintendent of the American Naval Academy after a significant service in the Civil War.
The "Hartford": US Navy sloop, the first to bear the name of Hartford, the capital of Connecticut. The ship participated in the East Indian War, the Civil War with the Battle of New Orleans and the siege of Vicksburg. In 1945, the ship was finally classified as a historic monument but it sank while it was moored on November 20, 1956.
The “Powhatan”: Inaugurated in 1850, retired in 1886, United States Navy steam frigate powered by two paddle wheels, which was used, among other things, against piracy in the China Sea and during the American Civil War. It was one of the largest, and one of the last American paddle ships. Its name is that of an Amerindian cacique of eastern Virginia.

William T. Sampson: militaire américain, amiral dans l'US Navy. Il a participé à la guerre hispano-américaine, et est le vainqueur de la bataille de Santiago de Cuba.
George Dewey: amiral de la marine des États-Unis, qui est devenu célèbre grâce à sa victoire à la bataille de la baie de Manille pendant la guerre hispano-américaine (sans les pertes des seules vies de sa propre force pendant la bataille: un homme est mort et un homme d’une crise cardiaque). En 1903, il a été honoré du grade d’amiral de la marine, le plus haut grade de la marine américaine. Il a été le premier et le seul dans l’histoire des États-Unis à recevoir ce grade.
Winfield S. Schley: contre-amiral dans la marine américaine et héros de la bataille de Santiago de Cuba pendant la guerre hispano-américaine.

William T. Sampson: American military, admiral in the US Navy. He participated in the Spanish-American War, and is the winner of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba.
George Dewey: Admiral of the United States Navy, who became famous thanks to his victory at the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War (without the loss of the only lives of his own strength during battle: a man died and a man had a heart attack). In 1903 he was honoured with the rank of Admiral of the Navy, the highest rank of the American Navy. He was the first and only one in the history of the United States to receive this rank.
Winfield S. Schley: Rear Admiral in the US Navy and hero of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War.

F – Académie navale des États-Unis: L'Académie navale d'Annapolis (en anglais United States Naval Academy, USNA) est la principale école navale des États-Unis. Elle est située sur l'embouchure du Severn dans le Comté d'Anne Arundel de l'État du Maryland. Elle fut fondée le 10 octobre 1845 par le secrétaire à la Marine des États-Unis, George Bancroft et le professeur de chaire de mathématiques William Chauvenet. L'école occupait alors un simple fort en bois, nommé Fort-Severn et s'appelait simplement “École navale” (Naval School). La première promotion comportait 50 marins. En 1850, l'école devint l'Académie navale, et son cursus passa à quatre ans. Son développement fut continu au fil des années. De nos jours, chaque promotion compte environ 4 000 élèves officiers. L'école s'ouvrit aux femmes en 1976. À l'heure actuelle, celles-ci représentent environ 15 % de chaque promotion.
E – West Point: The Annapolis Naval Academy (USNA) is the main naval school in the United States. It is located on the mouth of the Severn River in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It was founded on 10 October 1845 by the United States Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, and William Chauvenet, professor of mathematics. The school then occupied a simple wooden fort, named Fort-Severn and was simply called the Naval School. The first class consisted of 50 sailors. In 1850, the school became the Naval Academy, and its curriculum passed to four years. Its development has been continuous over the years. Today, each promotion has about 4,000 officer cadets. The school opened to women in 1976. Currently, women make up about 15% of each class.
