F – L’émission de 1890 est la seule série originale de timbres d’usage courant de l”American Bank Note Company”. Le contrat pour cette émission fut d’abord attribué à Charles F. Steel de Philadelphie au milieu de 1889. Celui-ci n’avait jamais gravé ou imprimé un timbre ou un billet de banque. Ce n’est qu’en septembre 1889 que le Département des Postes se rendit compte de la situation et lança une nouvelle offre. L”American Bank Note Company” remporta le nouveau contrat d’une durée de quatre ans.
E - The 1890 Issue was the American Bank Note Company’s first and only original definitive stamp series. The contract for the issue was originally awarded to Charles F. Steel of Philadelphia in mid-1889. Steel had never engraved or printed a stamp or banknote. Only in September 1889 the Post Office Department realized the situation and issued a new request for bids. The American Bank Note Company successfully secured a new contract for another four years.

L”American Bank Note Company” avait engagé le graveur d’origine allemande Steimle, à la suite de sa gravure d’un train. Le timbre fut émis le 22 février 1890, à deux mois près du centième anniversaire de la mort de Franklin.
Trivia
The American Bank Note Company had hired the German-born Steimle, after he submitted an engraving of a train engine. The stamp was officially issued on February 22, 1890, two months shy of the 100th anniversary of Franklin’s death.

Particularités
Le timbre fut imprimé et émis à l’origine en couleur lie-de-vin. Des plaintes concernant la qualité du timbre obligèrent le maître des postes de changer de couleur. L’encre carmin devint la couleur prédominante et familière pour la majorité de ces timbres de 2 c. (voir 3) ci-après).

The stamp was originally printed and issued in a lake colour, but complaints about stamp's quality soon prompted the postmaster general to order the ink colour changed. The new carmine ink became the predominant, familiar colour for the majority of these 2-cent stamps (see 3) hereafter).

Pendant son poste de superintendant du département pictural à l”American Bank Note Company”, Alfred Jones grava le portrait d’Abraham Lincoln pour le timbre de 4c. de l’émission de 1890. Né en Grande-Bretagne, Jones devint un graveur pour la firme d’impression de Philadelphie ”Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson” après son immigration vers les Etats-Unis. Au milieu des années 1850, le graveur rénommé de portraits exploita sa propre firme, qui plus tard fusionna avec l”American Bank Note Company”.

During his tenure as superintendent of the pictorial department at the American Bank Note Company, Alfred Jones engraved the portrait of Abraham Lincoln for the 4-cent stamp of the 1890 Issue. Born in Great Britain, Jones became an engraver for the Philadelphia printing firm Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson soon after immigrating to the United States. During the mid-1850s, the renowned portrait engraver operated his own firm, which later merged with the American Bank Note Company.

Le timbre de 5c. de l’émission de1890 fut le premier timbre américain à l’effigie d’Ulysses S. Grant. Grant et Sherman furent des 11 portraits de l’émission les deux nouveaux venus, tous deux ayant été généraux de l’Union pendant la guerre civile américaine. Après son rôle prépondérant de général en chef de l’armée de l’Union, Grant fut élu deux fois comme président des Etats-Unis (1869-1877). Il mourut en 1885, peu après avoir terminé ses mémoires.

The 5-cent stamp of the 1890 Issue was the first U.S. stamp to depict Ulysses S. Grant. Of the eleven men pictured in this issue, Grant and Sherman, both former Union generals during the American Civil War, were first-time subjects. After his defining role as general-in-chief of the Union army, Grant was twice elected president of the United States (1869-1877). He died in 1885, shortly after completing his memoirs.

E – William Sherman (1820-1891): soldier, business man, writer and general of politician, and a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. His career was marked by a permanent denial to engage in politics and in 1875 he publishes Memoirs, one of the direct testimonies most known of the Civil War. Analysing Sherman’s military background, the military historian Liddell Hart asserts that he is “the first modern general”.

F – Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819): commodore de la marine américaine, connu pour la victoire navale décisive du lac Érié lors de la guerre anglo-américaine de 1812. Après la signature d’un traité contre la piraterie avec le Vénézuéla, Hazard Perry qui commanda le schooner « Nonsuch » fut atteint de la fièvre jaune avec plusieurs membres de son équipage et mourut quelques jours plus tard.

The Oliver Perry stamp was the last 90-cent stamp of the Classic Period, and, unlike every other denomination issued between 1847 and 1893, it was never used during the Bureau and Modern Periods, making it the last 90-cent denomination printed and issued for the United States government. Edward Charles Steimle, the American Bank Note Company engraver who created the first denomination of the Issue, also engraved this last denomination.
