The 25-page feature story "What's This Game We Play in the Mirror?" in Meef Comix #1 picks up where the feature story "The Time Machine" in The Balloon Vendor (1971) left off. This time the tale begins with oddball physicist-inventor Cecil Quill building a machine that will shrink his friend Hodge's grotesquely swollen head (a deformation suffered during their last adventure) back to normal size. While working on that machine, Quill realizes that the machine might also enable them to "journey to a place where only the eyes of sleep can see."
Indeed, the machine transports Quill and Hodges (whose name is referenced only once in this book as "Herman," but I'm sticking with the name he was given in the previous story) into a bizarre world where dreams are literally manufactured for people. They end up on a guided tour of dream factories and experience all manner of transformations and interactions with other people's dreams.
As usual, every page in the story demonstrates Schrier's mastery of highly detailed pen and ink illustration. Dave Sheridan also contributes a fine five-page story about a young boy's nightmare.
