What I especially wanted to point out is that the problems (aside from the technical limitations) still too often stem from the mindset of many collectors. It makes sense that you reason from your own field of interest (and ingrained habits), but for LD as a whole that is counterproductive.

Toon originele berichtPoehee.

Pooh. I unleashed more than I intended. I actually wanted to not discuss the Prestige Booklet type and/or the Booklet type. I like it that way and like to use it.
The only question I had is whether it makes sense to make one Prestige Booklet, also Booklet and not the rest. It stings me to suddenly find a Prestige booklet in an otherwise exclusive set of booklets. I don't understand that and I want to understand or solve it.
Discussion about annual sets and collectors' albums and the last post of comic pins I read with interest, but were not part of my intention.

I am aware that I am in the habit of taking side roads rather quickly.
I will do my best to stay on topic ;-)

The fact that the main issue is a side issue is not a problem in itself.
The fact that 'Kind' is misused for that purpose is a problem.
That side issues are included in the side issues, that's asking for problems.
Soon the postal vans used to transport mail will also be included in the postage stamp section ('Delivery van with postal items'). Then the tools to maintain and repair those cars...
That exceptions are no longer exceptional, then you don't take yourself seriously.
Suppose tomorrow someone with the following image has an item ' Annual collection Japan 2012' added in the stamp section. What do you do with that then? Check the Michel or Yvert catalog? Want to take a crash course in Japanese to be able to read it from the picture? Both: nada. A stamp catalog provides an overview of items with a postal function. A book never, ever has a postal function.
In addition, you may still be able to read and write fluent Japanese: it will not be clear yet. There are only 2 terms in Japanese on the cover of that book (hello Japan).
And there you are with all your 'philatelic baggage'.
The item Leave it unreviewed for 10 years, until all of Korea has seen it as an 'internet hit'.
After all, the first Korean to visit LD and see something like this will be blown away. And actively share it. A 'Booklet' in the stamp section ...
If it is added in a 'books' section, then at least the type is ok, and the situation becomes less hilarious.
Books belong to books. Collector's albums with collector's albums.
'Booklet' for stamp collectors has a different meaning. Has nothing to do with compilation albums or catalogues. It is a form of postage stamps. Just like Velletje and Blok are a manifestation.
A folder, as an afterthought, balances just within the limit of what is permissible. It is craftsmanship where, rather limited to a theme or issue, some commercial filling is added to stamps.
A book (stockbook, compilation album, preprint album) is far beyond that limit.
A series is expected adding a neat scan of all items (loose stamps) of that series. So that everyone can see what that series means.
For a yearbook ... just try to make a clear scan with all the pages and all the stamps on it. And why ... it concerns a book that was published.
The first question I got about it was 'what function do these things have?'.
Insights are like nails (nails).. you know.

Top down.
Bottom up.
Die draad is verloren gelopen.
I actually wanted to not bring up the Prestige Booklet type and/or the Booklet type for discussion
Yes, but I do. The concept of booklet (English: Booklet) has not been filled in (handbook) and can therefore serve for anything and everything. Which is a shame.
As well as folder. Because I think 'Prestigeboekje' is a subdivision of 'Mapje' (and not of 'Boekje'). English: 'Presentation map'.
#4451339 is a poignant example of this. Fortunately 'rare' :)
#647317, based on the title in the image, seems to me to be a bulky book that tells the history of Stanley Gibbons. A prestigious booklet (novel).
These are 'species' that are provided without specifying what we mean by them.
A while back a (former) administrator started something: ' What is a postage stamp'. The intention was actually to get an answer to the question 'What is allowed in the stamp section'. Top down.
My answer then was: create definitions for all types provided.
What does not meet the defined definitions may not be included in, or must be described in a (new) permitted type. Bottom up.
That thread got lost.

- Prestige booklet is what the product is called
- Prestige booklet is how it is literally stated in the NVPH catalog
- What LD calls a Booklet, is called a Stamp Booklet in the NVPH catalog
Whether a prestige booklet is a specialization of booklet or folder: it will really itch me. What I only want is that you do the same with all (prestige) booklets. They are all Prestige Booklet + Booklet/Folder or they are all not. Treating one prestige booklet differently: I can't figure it out.
I am not a collector of prestige booklets, by the way. I happen to have almost all of the (Stamp)booklets. I think the arguments of

No, we can't. As long as we don't have a fixed definition or agreement as to what we mean by booklet, and what by folder.
It could just as well be given a third type: 'Other'. Who can argue that it is not correct?
For the users from the low countries it might not be that bad. But whoever comes from further, struggles with it again and again.
They do not have the NVPH. They don't know that background. they must be able to fall back on what the manual prescribes.
And the group that comes 'from further' grows every day.
It is great to have a definition that distinguishes between sheet and block. You can get away with that. Clear, simple and strict. Not everyone agrees, but that's how we do it in the LD stamp catalog.
If only it were so clear for every species.
As an administrator, you usually think 'Well, it must be so'. What else can you do.

You are absolutely right about that
We must indeed ensure that all the concepts used are internationally understandable and they are not.
The new Publisher field, which we hope to introduce really soon, the number of non-international varieties can already be reduced I think (such as W-envelop and Catawiki Stripenvelop which can then be covered by FDC).
Perhaps that Publisher field can also be used to bring other, still different, types together under a new type, whereby you can then split it up again via the Publisher field?

But with all types that are neatly described.
This is something that requires no additional investment or development. The species exist. Only a few lack any trace of description. There are some that appear to be Chinese (even to a Chinese).
BV: 'Prestige booklet' : 'A folder with the name 'Prestige booklet' on it. To check whether something is a prestige booklet: look in the NVPH'.
Obviously we won't formulate it that way lol. But at the moment that is the only explanation that can be given to users who are from Japan or from America.

There was a discussion about this years ago. I don't remember what exactly was called then, but first of all it will have to be determined what exactly you want to indicate with the term Type. Just like the term Use type should be defined.
In the list above, for example, I see Species like Soldier Seal and Railway vignette.
What is the difference with the Usage types Military and Railway?
P.S. To initiate: Kind = appearance and Usage type = function (?)

Ai I really really don't understand why this is derailing stamps. Publisher: I don't see the application here.
It is a very simple question: should one prestige book have double types or all of them?
Whether you later, ever have an even better solution, doesn't relieve you from doing the right thing now, does it?

and also folder is completely defined
Did I overlook it? I have completely re-read the handbook of stamps and again did not find that definition ... Which page?
I'm terribly sorry for the other >250 nations but I can't help them
I also regret that we cannot receive users from those other nations a little better, with clear terms to be used e.g.
Now they mainly get tapped on their fingers, because it is not good according to 'our generally known' cultural philatelic heritage.
Regret alone does not solve it, and those users from other nations only receive a cool, distant and/or unworldly welcome.
As a stamp catalogue, LD can (to a large extent) determine what and how. And share those provisions with everyone. That clarity must come for all types and types. Now everyone is right.
Example for Maximum cards:
In a (large) country it is an accepted convention that a card with more than 1 stamp on it is not a maximum card.
In another (big) country it is insisted that the image of the map may only have one 'view'.
In another (less large) country, the image may not be an (exact) enlargement of the stamp.
Well. If you summarize all the different rules of all countries, you can immediately measure more than three quarters of the Dutch maximum cards of a different kind (Molen cards, for example, or W cards :)). We don't.

Just counting from the collector of NL + overseas. I know them well: I am myself. A folder is a folder if the NVPH catalog says so. Same for prestige booklets and stamp booklets. Very neatly demarcated. The fact that you have a less strong definition in another country does not matter at all for how a NL collector expects a catalog to be put together for NL
If I would look at the Belgian stamp booklets and prestige booklets, I also expect that the adheres to Belgian conventions.

I also asked whether the manual could be adjusted accordingly, but if you wait for 1 definition for the world and the world does not agree, then you are limited to action until that time. Could that definition perhaps be tailored a bit more to country conventions? That way you keep things logical for people who know those conventions and they can also be tested more sharply against each other. If you see differences better, you can also have a better discussion whether you want to solve that.

The species is a (postage stamp) booklet, the subspecies Prestige booklet. Commercial thoughts play a role in the background with this (British?) invention (you can sell a more luxurious version at a slightly higher price).
The LD catalog contains the oldest in Great Britain from 1972 and there are 97 so far. Prestige books in, at Guernsey 15, at Jersey 14. In short, what Postmaster says is absolutely true. The British have all rightly been given the characteristics booklet and prestige booklet. Because the Dutch postal service only saw the commercial possibilities late, that one prestige booklet was given that species and subspecies and you noticed it.

If that is the case: then all prestige booklets must also become booklets - I say: no. That pollutes what you see in books. If a prestige booklet is a subspecies of booklet then I don't have to mention that too. A telegram stamp is a postage stamp. A coil stamp is a franking stamp, a personal stamp is also a franking stamp etc etc. If you use duplicate types one kind should not be a subspecies of the other.
Otherwise I need “booklets but no prestige booklets” in the search mechanism. And a search option “booklets + subspecies” then becomes attractive.
1 item of all NL prestige booklets making a booklet is just not consistent according to every definition I can think of. LD has no subspecies as a category, by the way. If there were, it might flatten part of the discussion. However, Raoul might not agree with the choice to classify the Prestige Booklet as a Booklet

P.S. To give a start: Kind = appearance and Usage type = function (?)
You are right (I think) with this simple description. This is already stated in the help text for the Type field. At Use type it could be added that this concerns the function of the item.
Just from the margin: What is the difference between a Booklet and Folder?
Since these types occur often, there will be are differences. Is there a difference in the number of pages or implementation?
Perhaps there are people who want/can make a good background page for the various types.

then all prestige booklets must also become booklet
Try it and add the type of booklet to a number of prestige booklets. Then (in about 8 years :-) you will automatically receive an answer to your question, when it is approved or rejected.
I say no.
Adding both separately as a species can be useful if you want to select separately by prestige booklet. The question is, however, whether there is anyone who saves prestige booklets, but not (postage) booklets. Or that there is someone who wants to select exclusively on prestige books. I can hardly imagine it. So as far as I'm concerned, the prestige booklets as their own kind can be abolished and simply placed with the stamp booklets. Saves another kind, Rene also happy :-). And saves another problem at the stamp section. In the same way, integrated hanging book, hanging book and hanging packaging can also be looked at. And also to hanging book and booklet. At first sight that seems to me to be a division into subspecies. This could also apply to postal stationery - private and postal stationery. Is it necessary to maintain your own species for this, can species be merged or can it be entered somewhere as extra info in an existing field?

To be honest I started this whole discussion because I don't want to see the prestige booklets between the stamp booklets. Merging Booklet and Prestige Booklet does satisfy my desire for consistency, but will probably not appeal to both Prestige Booklet savers and Stamp Booklet savers directly. Selecting both does not help either: then all Prestige booklets will also be between the Booklets.

Wie A zegt ...

Could this be a 'Prestige box'? Then that species can already be added. The definition can be found in the NVPH?
#9210745
The definitions Folder, Booklet, Prestige folder (W-envelope, Blueprint , ...) would therefore be obvious if you have an NVPH catalog.
From now on you must have an NVPH catalog to understand the LD catalog, that's how I understood it.
That is where internationalization goes completely wrong.
Or split up LD: LD for NVPH owners (with all those species that are so clearly described there), and an LD for non-NVPH owners (where those species not provided).
Enough of the joke. If you provide a type on LD, and it is in use, a user expects to be able to check in the handbook what exactly that kind means on LD as Catalog. Whether that user comes from the Netherlands, America or China: it doesn't matter. It should be clear to everyone.
For example, on LD we also use our own, clear definition for Blok, Velletje and 'Skin' (Luxury Skin :)).
What is still missing: 'Combination from Prestige Booklet'. For the ardent supporters of book mutilation. Who says A ...

Zou dit een 'Prestigedoosje' kunnen zijn?
Simpel zat. Gejatte afbeeldingen, dus afkeuren. Weer een zorg minder.
Could this be a 'Prestige box'?
Simple enough. Created images, so reject it. One less worry.
