- les volutes se trouvant en-dessous du label inférieur se terminent en forme de petites boules;
- les ornements du dessus sont sensiblement complets.
b) Type II :
- se présente comme le type I au-dessus mais les petites boules et les bouts des ornements du bas manquent.
c) Type III :
Les lignes courbes en haut et en bas dont il est question pour le Type I sont interrompues au milieu.
E – There are three main types for this stamp :
a) Type I :
- complete curved lines above the labels “U.S. POSTAGE”
- the scrolls below the lower label end with little balls ;
- the ornaments at top are substantially complete.
b) Type II :
- as type I, but the little balls and the ornaments at bottom are incomplete.
c) Type III :
- the curved lines at top and at bottom set out in type I are broken in the middle.
Particularités:
Douze planches ont été confectionnées qui ont servi aussi bien pour les exemplaires dentelés que pour les exemplaires non dentelés.

There were twelve plates made used for both the imperforate and perforated design.

Particularités:
L’encre qui fut employé pour l’impression de ce timbre était une formule de haute qualité contenant 80 pour cent de rouge vénitien (oxyde de fer/rouille) et 20 pour cent de vermillon (sulfure rouge de mercure). Non seulement ces ingrédients donnèrent la couleur particulière d’orange brun mais aida également à produire une impression supérieure, et la sensibilité de décolorisation est très minime. Après environ quatre mois cette formule devait céder la place en faveur du teint carmin brunâtre. La raison de ce changement n’est pas connu.
Trivia :
The ink used to print this stamp was a high-quality formula of approximately 80 percent Venetian red (ferric oxide/rust) and 20 percent vermilion (red mercuric sulfide). The ingredients not only gave the ink its distinctive orange brown color, but it also helped produce a superior impression, and its susceptibility to discoloration is very minimal. This formula was discarded after about four months in favor of the brownish carmine shade. The reason why remains unknown.

3) 5 c brun-rouge ou brun-rouge foncé – red brown or dark red brown
F - Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) : homme d’état, secrétaire d’état et vice-président avant de devenir le troisième président des Etats-Unis. Il est le premier président à être réélu. Présidence du 4 mars 1801 au 4 mars 1809.
E – Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826) : statesman, secretary of state and vice-president before becoming the third president of the United States. He is the first president being reelected. Presidency from the 4th of March 1801 to the 4th of March 1809.

Particularités:
Il n’y avait pas de bonnes raisons d‘avoir un timbre de 5 c du temps de l’émission. Il n’y avait simplement pas de tarif à 5 c, sauf si vous envoyiez au tarif bateau à quai vers la France. En effet, la France, où Thomas Jefferson devint populaire quand il y était ambassadeur. Ce qui pourrait expliquer pourquoi son portrait fut choisi pour l’image du timbre.
Trivia :
At the time of issue there was no good reason to have a 5 c stamp. There simply was no 5 c rate, unless you were sending the ship to shore rate to France. Yes, France, where Thomas Jefferson gained popularity with the French while ambassador there. Which may also explain why his portrait was chosen for the vignette of the stamp.

b) Type II :
The design is complete at the top. The outer line a the bottom is broken in the middel. The shelles are partly away.
c) Type III :
The outer lines are broken above “POSTAGE” and «X». The bottom is similar to type II.
d) Type IV :
The outer lines have been recut.
Particularités:
Les timbres ont une grande palette de verts, allant du vert clair vers le vert foncé. Plus la teinte de vert devient plus foncé, plus le timbre devient désirable. La valeur de 10 c a été imprimée avec des espaces plus larges entre les timbres que les valeurs de 1 c, 3 c et 5 c: par conséquent des copies avec moins de quatre marges sol vendus à forte réduction.
Trivia :
The stamps come in a whole spectrum of greens, ranging from light green to dark green. The darker the shade of green, the more desirable. The 10 c value was printed with wider spaces between the stamps than the 1 c, 3 c and 5 c values, consequently copies with less than four margins are sold at a heavy discount.

Particularités:
Le portrait de 12 c de George Washington est légèrement différent du portrait de 10 c ; étant basé sur la gravure de Durand et pas sur la peinture originale. Le résultat en était un portrait plus clairement défini, malgré le fait que 12 c a été conçu après le 10 c. Le portrait de 10 c est plus fidèle à l’original, gardant plus du sourire ‘dents de bois’ que Gilbert avait si bien saisi.
Trivia :
The 12 c portrait of George Washington differs slightly from the 10 c portrait as it was based off Durand's engraving and not the original painting. The result was a more clearly defined portrait, this despite the fact that the 12 c was designed after the 10 c. The 10 c portrait is more faithful to the original, keeping more of the 'wood teeth' smile that Gilbert captured so well.
