Good question because the paper for books and comics from 1800 and well into 1900 and certainly in 1947 just after the war has always been woody. Specific mysterious star (I have had) was thick ragged when already browned paper. Tear sensitive. The edition with woodfree (which it is not) is just thinner less paper. I also had the Unicorn and Black Rocks of those thick wood-containing editions, but there may be more of those editions. I do not know why the wood-containing paper is seen as the 1st printing round, it may just as well be that in the post-war scarce paper years the smooth paper ran out at a moment and people were forced to switch to that loose paper .....

I am not such a "Star" in explaining so cut from a paper site:

"Wood free" does not mean that no wood was used in the production process of paper . Cellulose and wood are the basic raw materials in almost all types of paper. The ratio between these two raw materials determines whether the paper is wood-free or wood-containing. When using little wood and a lot of cellulose, we speak of "wood-free". When a lot of wood and little cellulose are used, we speak of "wood-containing". "Wood-free" papers are generally slightly less rough and slightly whiter than wood-containing papers.

how to tell the difference

In any case not from the images in Catawiki, because scans 1 and 2 of 24303 have been copied one on one to 543637 (double watermark).

Perhaps the thickness of the book can be an indication, but then someone who has both versions has to measure them.

Often fibers can be seen in wood containing paper and the books are slightly thicker

I have both albums. Measured on the side and squeezed tightly, it saves 2mm. For me, the wood-containing one is 9 mm and the wood-free one is 7 mm. (From the top of the front cover to the bottom of the back cover).

I couldn't find any pictures, so I have now added pictures of my woodfree copy. Now that is such a mediocre, dirty discolored copy that it almost seems woody: p so if someone has scans of a nice copy, make sure to adjust it ...

edit: @ harry - both are listed as first edition I think? Only wood containing is rarer.
