Something that can greatly speed up the registration and sorting of a personal collection is by means of photo recognition. (e.g. google goggles and others)

For example, that you take a photo of a stamp with the app on your smartphone, it looks up that photo in the stamp database (with selected options, e.g. country / period) and automatically recognizes the stamp and then you can easily and quickly add it to your own collection.

This should be possible, but it might take a while to find out how to implement this in the app. Anyway, it would mean a tremendous advance using available technology!

That sounds very easy indeed, but in practice it is very difficult.

Just have a look at the stamp forum for the definition of a stamp. If we cannot agree on that, then recognition becomes completely difficult! There is also no barcode on a stamp. With comics it might still be possible, given the barcode, but it is not everywhere.

Furthermore, recognition is not at all as easy as it seems. Recognition in the human mind cannot be programmed, if only because of the different variations.

But the idea is very nice, but I think it is unfortunately future music!

Hey, it kind of depends on how you look at it. My intention was to work with an existing database of images of stamps, so eg the stamp database on this website. With this, a kind of almost unique code can be generated per image (this is also done in music recognition) and if you take a photo with your smartphone with a stamp on it, the outlines of it can be recognized with existing algorithms (eg. google goggles is an application that can recognize a lot of things), just like a barcode on a product can be recognized, and then a code can be generated for the image within the contours, which is then looked up in the already available database for comparison. The nice thing is that the image does not have to be exactly the same, there may be deviations. If the stamp is already included in the database, this will yield a result. This is a very fast way to find out, for example, the year of a certain stamp and further information if it is in the database.

The techniques exist, it just has to be implemented, the future is less distant than you might think: -).

Is there already such an app available? A few years ago Michel (of those German catalogs) was working on something like this, but don't know if they have already implemented this in their subscriptions or virtual catalogs on cdrom or stick, will check this later.
