Message is in Dutch
Translate to English I happen to see with coins that United Kingdom is used with Great Britain in brackets. But UK is really different from GB ...

Message is in Dutch
Translate to English That may be, but it is simply wrong. UK includes Northern Ireland and GB without. Why justify something completely wrong?

Message is in Dutch
Translate to English I suspect Northern Ireland does not have its own currency, so it is better to hang everything under UK only

Translate to EnglishUnless you're talking about Olympic athletes...then 'GBR' (the Olympic Committee has used it since 1896) again includes Northern Ireland, even including the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands. Although the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man do not belong to Great Britain.
Not only Belgium is a mess regarding political division.
I also think the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man don't have their own currency?

Translate to EnglishUnited Kingdom is different from United kingdom
And it depends on how old you are with what you learned in school e.g. with us we learned England and that is the whole of England, Wales and Scotland
And then you had Ireland and we mean North and South Ireland
Great Britain is derived from Great Britain where also Austalie and Canada and India and Hong kong and carry on a bit more belonged some things fell away then the UK became
Same thread stamps must be Philately and underneath stamps, postage stamps, sealing stamps
So it depends on how OLD you are

Show original messageI am afraid this tells more about the teacher or pupil than the facts. Great Britain has been and is just the island shared by England, Wales, and Scotland. Hong Kong and Australia have never been part of Great Britain.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland dates to 1801 and included Great Britain and Ireland. After Ireland became a Free State in 1922 and six of the northern provinces of Ireland chose not to become part of the Free State, the name changed to United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
The Isle of Man and the Bailiwicks of Guernsey and Jersey are neither part of Great Britain, nor of the United Kingdom. They are Crown Dependencies.
As for the claim that Great Britain became the UK after Australia and 'Hong Kong' were no longer part of Great Britain that cannot have been taught before 1 july 1997, the date that Crown Colony was given back to China. Neither 'British Empire' nor 'British possession' ever meant 'Great Britain.'
The coins of the United Kingdom are minted by the Royal Mint. Bank notes are issued by different banks and there exist notes from England, Scotland, and Northern Ireland that are valid throughout the UK.
The Bank of England is the only bank that may issue bank notes in England and Wales.
'Great Britain' however has been and is used as synonym for 'United Kingdom.' But this is incorrect although often convenient.
